Daniel Mendelsohn

Internationally bestselling author of An Odyssey and The Lost, longtime critic for The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books, and translator of Homer’s Odyssey. In conversation at Landmark Booksellers.

Daniel Mendelsohn is an internationally bestselling author, critic, essayist, and translator. Born in New York City in 1960, he took degrees in Classics from the University of Virginia and Princeton, and since 1991 has been one of our most prolific men of letters, a frequent contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books, where he now serves as Editor-at-Large. His books include the memoirs An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic and The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and France’s Prix Médicis, along with several essay collections, a study of Greek tragedy, and a celebrated translation of C. P. Cavafy. His new translation of Homer’s Odyssey, with introduction and commentary, arrived in 2025 from the University of Chicago Press. Among his many honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship and the rank of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters from the Republic of France. He teaches literature at Bard College, and we were delighted to welcome him to Landmark Booksellers.

Purchase Daniel's Books

Daniel Mendelsohn’s acclaimed new translation of Homer’s The Odyssey, published in 2025 and soon to reach the screen in Christopher Nolan’s film, has been hailed as one of the finest ever rendered in English. Read it alongside An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic, his tender, award-honored memoir of teaching the poem to a seminar that included his eighty-one-year-old father, then retracing Odysseus’s voyage together. Side by side, they are the poem and the life it still shapes.
