About this book
More than Petticoats: Remarkable Tennessee Women presents the stories of twelve extraordinary women from Tennessee's past. Meet Elizabeth Gilmer, who transformed herself into columnist Dorothy Dix; Sarah Polk, America's eleventh First Lady; and Emma Bell Mills, who recorded rural mountain life through words and paintings. The women featured in this book, all born before 1900, made lasting contributions during their lives -- the outcomes of which are still influencing us today.
A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Susan Sawyer worked as a magazine editor and communications consultant before establishing a career as an author. History serves as the centerpiece for much of her work. Her publishing credits include twelve books and more than four hundred magazine and newspaper articles. She resides in Tennessee with her husband, Ron, and miniature schnauzer, Maxwell Smart Sawyer.
